Debating Tips

October 14, 2009

Hello all and thank you for coming out to debate with us this past week. The level of debating has been phenomenal, and we, the Executive have already noted certain speakers we might like to go to Montreal in  January.

This is not to say of course, that we plan to show favouritism. We’ll be watching you guys as you slowly progress from being better, to being the best debators in UTM. Couple of tips that we feel you ought to be careful of. They are presented below in no specific order.

  • Remember to work as a team. The debate doesn’t end after you’ve spoken. Be willing to help out the whole team.
  • Public Speaking101: Never forget that you need to maintain eye-contact with the audience at all times. Stare down your opponents!
  • Points of Information are a great way to show you can think on the spot and can be an excellent asset. Conversely, they can portray a negative image, and an unprofesional side that may reflect negatively on the entire team. Use, but use wisely
  • Be clear. Make sure we know what you’re saying. Be confident. You may be spouting nonsense, but if you can sell it, no one’s going to question you
  • Know what your team’s been saying. Pay attention and construct your arguments so as to re-inforce each other.
  • Passion is excellent. Passion is good. We want to see it. But do not let it get the better of you. Exercise restraint.
